Sound familiar?

The finance side is the bit most business owners dread.

When you're busy running a business, it is hard to keep track of the money coming in, the money going out, the money that should have come in, and the money that hasn't gone out.

  • Are you constantly worried about your VAT returns, dreading the deadline?
  • Are you second-guessing which supplier bills have been paid and which are still due?
  • Are you spending your evenings and weekends buried in spreadsheets and receipts?

Once someone is helping you, things get easier. You use your time on the business while I keep track of the numbers.

Not your standard service

Pick 'n' Mix. You only pay for what you actually use.

Forget one-size-fits-all packages. Choose the services you need to build a bespoke, cost-effective plan that does exactly what you're looking for, adapting month to month as the business changes.

Who you'll be working with

No two businesses are the same, so why be treated like they are?

I'm Lewis Wright, an AAT licensed accountant and QuickBooks ProAdvisor. I spent six years preparing financial statements and tax returns at a Devon practice before setting up The Wright Books to work directly with small business owners.

I know it can be daunting to open up the inner workings of your business to someone new. It is a responsibility I don't take lightly.

What step four actually involves

  • Proof of identity

As an AAT licensed accountant I am legally required to verify who you are before acting for you. I use Firmcheck, so it is done from your phone: a selfie and a couple of documents, followed by a short questionnaire so I can learn a bit more about you and the business. It takes a few minutes.

  • A letter of engagement

Sent to you straight after your free consultation, alongside your proposal. It sets out exactly what I am doing for you, what it costs, and what is not included. You have seven days to read it over and decide, with no pressure either way.

  • Professional clearance, if you are switching

You let your current accountant know you are moving, then I write to them for professional clearance and to arrange the transfer of your records. It is a routine part of how the profession works, and the paperwork side of it sits with me.

  • Getting your records set up digitally

Whatever you keep now, we get it into software that works properly. Digital record-keeping is a requirement of Making Tax Digital rather than a nice-to-have, so for most people this is the moment it gets sorted for good. As a certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor, setting that up is routine work here.

Guides

Useful whether or not you ever hire me.

  • Making Tax Digital, explained

Four submissions a year instead of one. What it means for sole traders and landlords, and the dates you need.

  • How to change accountants

A hassle-free process, and no waiting for your year end. Professional clearance explained, step by step.

  • Every tax deadline

Self-Assessment, VAT, corporation tax, payroll and Companies House, with the dates that depend on your year end.

Questions

The things people ask before they get in touch.

If yours is not here, ask it directly. I reply to everything within 1 business day.

How much will this actually cost me?

It depends entirely on which services you pick, which is the point of the Pick 'n' Mix approach. Bookkeeping services start from £10 a month each, a Self-Assessment tax return starts from £200 a year, and year-end accounts with corporation tax start from £600 a year. The pricing page sets out every service, with worked examples for a few typical businesses so you can see roughly where you would land before you speak to me.

Do I have to buy a package I do not need?

No. That is the whole reason I work this way. You choose only the services you actually want and leave the rest, and we can change the mix month to month as the business changes. If you only need a tax return once a year, that is a perfectly reasonable thing to ask for.

Are you qualified and regulated?

Yes. I am licensed and regulated by AAT under licence number 1008968. AAT is recognised by HM Treasury to supervise compliance with the Money Laundering Regulations, and The Wright Books Limited is supervised by AAT in that respect. I am also a certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor.

I already have an accountant. Is changing a hassle?

Less than most people expect. You let your current accountant know you are moving, then I write to them for professional clearance and arrange the transfer of your records. It is a routine process in this profession and most of the work sits with me. There is a page explaining exactly how it works, step by step.

How switching works

Do we have to meet in person?

Only if you want to. I am based at The Quay in Exeter and you are welcome to book a meeting there, but I work with businesses across the UK entirely through cloud accounting software. Plenty of clients I have never met face to face, and the service is identical.

What happens at the free consultation?

A 30-minute conversation about your business and what you need. I will ask what you are doing now, where it is going wrong, and what you would like to stop worrying about, and I build your quote on screen as we talk so you can see the figure taking shape rather than waiting for it. Afterwards I send your proposal and letter of engagement, and you have seven days to read them over and decide. There is no obligation, and if I am not the right fit I will say so.

How quickly will you get back to me?

I aim to reply to every enquiry within 1 business day.

Are you insured?

Yes. I hold professional indemnity insurance, which is a requirement of my AAT licence. It is there so that if something did go wrong, you are protected rather than out of pocket.

Do you work with sole traders as well as limited companies?

Both. Sole traders, landlords and limited companies are all normal here. The work differs quite a lot between them, which is another reason the services are priced individually rather than bundled.

Ready to build your perfect package?

It begins with a simple, no-obligation chat. Book your free consultation and we can put your Pick 'n' Mix package together.
